Proton Launches Public Version of Bitcoin Wallet
The creators of the email client and VPN service Proton have made the Proton Wallet Bitcoin wallet available to all users.
Proton Wallet is now available for all!
We onboarded over 100,000 users during early access and received plenty of positive feedback; thank you.
Now, we’re making #Bitcoin easily accessible. Anyone can sort, store, send & receive Bitcoin, regardless of experience level. pic.twitter.com/Tfk2vXjEbd

The application is available in web version, on iOS, and Android.
The company launched a beta version of the wallet in July 2024 for a limited group of early Proton Visionary users. According to the project’s announcement, more than 100,000 participants were involved in the testing.
In a comment to The Block, Proton founder Andy Yen noted that “digital freedom” requires not only privacy but also control over one’s finances. He emphasized that the company has long “supported Bitcoin”—the firm has accepted the first cryptocurrency since 2014 and holds the received coins on its balance sheet.
“During Proton’s initial crowdfunding campaign in 2014, Bitcoin became a lifeline when PayPal temporarily blocked our ability to receive donations,” Yen added.
Proton Wallet is a non-custodial wallet with open-source code and an end-to-end encryption system similar to Proton Mail. The team does not have access to users’ keys, and confidential data is stored on the company’s servers with an “enhanced version” of the Secure Remote Password protocol for authorization.
In February, Telegram developers mandated that all third-party crypto wallets use the TON Connect protocol to connect to the TON network, sparking criticism within the community.
