The new chip features eight cores:
- a high-performance Cortex-X3 clocked at 3.2 GHz;
- two mid-range Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.8 GHz;
- two Cortex-A710 performance cores clocked at 2.8 GHz;
- three energy-efficient Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 2 GHz.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is built on TSMC’s 4nm process. The L3 cache size is 8 MB.
The developers equipped the chip with an upgraded Qualcomm AI Engine and an enhanced Hexagon neural processor. According to the company, in AI tasks the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is 4.35 times faster than its predecessor, with a 60% increase in performance per watt.
Qualcomm says the processor can run machine-learning algorithms for object recognition, translation, and real-time transcription of speech on the device.
Developers emphasised camera features. They say the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can automatically enhance photos and videos in real time using semantic segmentation.
The processor supports sensors up to 200 megapixels, the AV1 codec, and can also deliver 8K HDR video at up to 60 frames per second.
Additionally, the chipset supports ray tracing in games, 5G networks, and Wi-Fi 7.
The first smartphones based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are expected by the end of 2022. The company has already announced that it is working with partners such as Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Sony.
As reported in October, Google presented smartphones Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Both devices are equipped with the Tensor G2 tensor processor and support a number of AI features.
In September, Apple released the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max powered by the proprietary A16 Bionic chip with an integrated neural engine.
