Roskomnadzor announced “the start of partial restriction of access” to Facebook from 25 February 2022. This is is reported on the agency’s website.
According to the statement, the decision was made in response to restrictions affecting several Russian media accounts. The Prosecutor General’s Office, in agreement with the Foreign Ministry, deemed the social network complicit in “the violation of fundamental rights and freedoms of people and citizens of Russia”.
“In accordance with the decision of the General Prosecutor’s Office regarding the social network Facebook, starting from 25 February 2022, Roskomnadzor, in accordance with the law, is taking measures of partial restriction of access”, — the statement reads.
The regulator did not specify what exact measures were being referred to.
Roskomnadzor complemented the notice about the temporary restriction of access to Facebook. According to the notice, the measures imply traffic throttling.
In September 2021 it emerged that Roskomnadzor allegedly appealed to Google with a demand to lift restrictions on Russia Today’s YouTube channels, threatening block the service in the country.
Earlier, on March 10, Roskomnadzor began slowing Twitter down in Russia because the social network refused to remove content that the agency deemed unlawful. The regulator also threatened Twitter with a full blockade.
For refusing to remove prohibited content, the Russian court fined Twitter 8.9 million rubles.
In May, the agency partially reversed the slowing of Twitter, but warned of restrictions on Facebook and YouTube.
