Russian Prosecutor-General’s Office blocks another privacy-focused email service

The Russian Prosecutor-General’s Office has added the Mailbox domain and IP addresses of the privacy-focused mail service to the register of banned information, according to «РосКомСвобода».

\n

Roskomnadzor’s request to block Mailbox became known as early as September last year.

\n

Roskomnadzor said that the service did not provide data for inclusion in the Register of Information Disseminators (ORI).

\n

One of the reasons for the authorities’ interest in blocking the service could have been false reports of terrorist attacks, some of which were sent via Mailbox.

\n

Mailbox stated that it had received no requests from Russian authorities. The service’s representatives also said they were prepared to hand over the necessary data, with the exception of users’ personal information.

\n

In February, Roskomnadzor withdrew the lawsuit after the company agreed to join the ORI registry.

\n

Mailbox stressed that they cannot disclose encryption keys to Russian authorities, as they do not store them \u201c-in plain text\u201d.

\n

The service’s CEO, Pir Heinlein, said at the same time that he was prepared for Mailbox to be blocked in Russia.

\n

Earlier in August, the Prosecutor-General’s Office blocked two privacy-focused resources — anonymousspeech.com and vistomail.com.
