Skale Network uses Base for AI-focused L3 launch on Ethereum.
Skale Network is leveraging the infrastructure of Base to launch a third-layer (L3) solution on Ethereum, aimed at AI applications.

The SKALE product is optimised for “agent workloads”. According to the developers, the architecture is focused on the x402 payment protocol—a Coinbase-supported solution for AI transactions.
“Agents require the best block space for on-chain operations. SKALE Expand allows the deployment of SKALE Manager—the core smart contracts that power SKALE networks—on any EVM blockchain, bringing gasless transactions, instant finality, and SKALE privacy to other ecosystems,” a project representative noted in a conversation with The Block.
The new solution provides agents with access to SKALE’s scalable infrastructure, as well as the liquidity, user base, fiat gateways, and distribution channels of the Base network.
Previously, the project implemented the BITE protocol to protect against malicious MEV, including front-running, sandwich attacks, and sniping.
A credit system will be introduced in the network for paying computational resources. This is a familiar model in the AI sector, freeing agents and users from managing gas when working with on-chain applications. Credits can be purchased on Base using USDC or SKL.
L3 networks add custom functionality that second-layer solutions cannot efficiently provide, while maintaining the security and liquidity of the parent ecosystem.
This marks the first phase of the SKALE Expand multichain initiative. Its aim is to transform the project into an “agent layer” operating across various L1 and L2 networks. This will allow users and liquidity to “remain in native networks.”
“The goal is simple: to provide agents with a holistic environment wherever they operate, instead of forcing them to relearn gas models and UX in each network. As SKALE Expand rolls out across more blockchains, the same agent code and x402 flows can operate in multiple blockchain ecosystems with a unified execution environment,” project representatives explained.
In 2023, Skale Network introduced the Levitation Protocol—a scaling solution based on zero-knowledge proof technology ZK-Rollups.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin criticised L3 solutions, stating they “do not magically increase throughput.”
