Stripe users will be able to convert incoming payments and any amount of their balance into BTC. The service will be part of the company’s publicly available beta version of the new App Marketplace — slated to launch soon.
OpenNode supports Bitcoin payments both on-chain and through Lightning Network. In February, the Los Angeles-based project’s team closed a Series A round at $20 million with a $220 million valuation.
In early 2018, Stripe dropped Bitcoin due to sharp price volatility and long transaction confirmation times. Later, company president John Collison did not rule out a return of support for digital gold in the future.
In October 2021, Stripe announced the recruitment of developers and designers for its cryptocurrency division ‘to build the future of Web3 payments’.
Earlier, Collison described himself and the company as ‘ardent enthusiasts of Bitcoin’, and expressed interest in a number of innovative projects including Solana blockchain and the Lightning Network.
In April 2022 Stripe added support for payments in the stablecoin USDC on the Polygon blockchain.
