Telegram’s Pavel Durov Permitted to Leave France Temporarily
Telegram founder Pavel Durov has been allowed to temporarily leave France, reports France24, citing AFP sources.
According to those familiar with the matter, on the morning of March 15, a judge granted the entrepreneur permission to leave the country “for several weeks.” It is also reported that he traveled to Dubai.
A few days earlier, authorities reportedly agreed to make certain changes to the conditions of Durov’s detention and supervision at his request.
Pavel Durov commented on his release on his personal Telegram channel.
“I want to thank the investigating judges for allowing this to happen, as well as my lawyers and team for their tireless efforts to demonstrate that in matters of moderation, cooperation, and crime fighting, Telegram has not only met but exceeded its legal obligations over the years,” he wrote.
Durov noted that the investigation into criminal activities on the messenger continues, but the billion-strong Telegram community will overcome it all.
The judicial control obligations concerning Pavel Durov have been suspended from March 15 to April 7. This was reported to TASS by a source in the French prosecutor’s office.
The businessman was detained at Le Bourget airport on the evening of August 24, 2024. He was accused, among other things, of complicity in the distribution of drugs and child pornography, as well as refusing to provide information upon request by authorized bodies.
Five days later, Durov was released on bail of €5 million, with the obligation to report to a police station twice a week and not leave France.
On December 6, 2024, the Telegram founder was first interrogated regarding the case. Officials believe that his case will not be considered before 2026.
