Twitter to bolster account security ahead of the U.S. presidential election

Twitter to step up security for some accounts ahead of the U.S. presidential election.

Additional measures include stronger passwords, protection against password resets, and two-factor authentication. The service will also update its internal systems to respond swiftly to suspicious activity.

Notifications about changes to security policy will be sent to some users. These include:

  • governors and U.S. Secretaries of State;
  • members of the executive branch and Congress;
  • political parties and candidates;
  • major U.S. news agencies and political journalists.

“While we require higher security for some accounts due to the peculiarities of the election period, this could be done by any Twitter user,” the statement notes.

Earlier, one of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official Twitter accounts was hacked. They posted a series of tweets urging donations to the National Relief Fund in cryptocurrency.

Earlier this July, unknown hackers breached the Twitter accounts of Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and other celebrities. At the time, posts appeared about a fake 5,000 BTC giveaway from Cryptoforhealth.
