Northcom has asked Congress for an additional $29.8 million to purchase equipment and optimize infrastructure for artificial intelligence and machine learning. The story appears in Defense News.
The department says that modernization will bolster the Pentagon’s data-collection, processing and storage efforts in the cloud computing environment. The improved infrastructure will also facilitate information sharing among Defense Department components, they added.
According to U.S. Air Force General Glen VanHerck, “advanced capabilities” such as AI will give the United States an edge over formidable competitors.
“Artificial intelligence and machine learning will enable extracting the necessary information from existing data sets and sharing it with leaders at all levels to widen the space for decision-making,” VanHerck told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
In October 2021, former Pentagon software chief Nicholas Chaillan said that China won the AI race against the US.
A week later, the Ministry of Defense disputed the former employee’s claim.
In March, the Pentagon urged expanding the use of AI to avoid losing to China and Russia.
