US Navy personnel sold the personal data of 9,000 people for bitcoins
A grand jury in Fresno, California has indicted a California couple on charges of fraud and theft of personal information, according to a DOJ statement.
The two defendants — Marquis Asaad Hooper and Natasha Rene Chalk — served in the Navy. According to authorities, Hooper gained access to a company’s database under the pretext of verifying personnel.
According to the indictment, the couple sold the personal data of more than 9,000 people for $160,000 in Bitcoin.
Three months later, the company blocked Hooper’s account. He attempted to regain access through a chief petty officer aboard the aircraft carrier George Washington. To sign the agreement with the firm, he obtained fake driver’s licenses and documents.
Hooper and Chalk face up to 20 years in prison.
