According to Mempool, the sender transferred 0.00010036 BTC and set a fee of 1.026 BTC. With the average transaction cost around $0.59, the fee for a $10 transaction could have been approximately $0.2.
Scott Norris, CEO of the mining company Optiminer, speculated that the user overlooked the fee.
“It’s not that difficult — many wallets allow setting arbitrary values. It’s hard to say whether it was an accident or intentional,” he commented to Decrypt.
At the time of the transaction, the price of the first cryptocurrency was $103,000. Currently, the asset is trading around $104,700.

Not an Uncommon Occurrence
In April, another user paid about 0.75 BTC (~$59,204) in fees while attempting to replace an already sent but unconfirmed transaction with a new one — with a higher value.
A similar incident occurred with a participant in the Ethereum network — while transferring 0.88 ETH worth ~$2,262, they spent 34 ETH (~$89,239) on gas.
In September 2023, an unknown individual paid a $510,000 fee for transferring 0.074 BTC.
In November of the same year, a user lost a record 83.65 BTC ($3.1 million) in transaction costs. Later, they claimed to have been a victim of a hacking attack.
To substantiate their claim, the user signed a message from the specified Bitcoin address, which was subsequently confirmed by Mempool tool developer Mononaut, as well as Casa co-founder and CTO Jameson Lopp.
As reported, the mining pool AntPool, which received the multi-million dollar fee, announced its readiness to reimburse it.
