Vitalik Buterin outlines Ethereum development plans for 2024

Ethereum co‑founder Vitalik Buterin published an updated roadmap for 2024 with ‘minor changes’ compared with last year’s version.

Among the priorities he listed:

• The Merge — achieving the ideal, simple, reliable and decentralized PoS-consensus;
• The Surge — achieving 100,000 transactions per second on Ethereum and rollups;
• The Scourge — reducing centralisation risks in the Ethereum PoS design, especially around MEV and liquid staking;
• The Verge — simplifying block verification;
• The Purge — simplifying the protocol, addressing technical debt and containing costs of participating in the network;
• The Splurge — other fixes.

Earlier in December, Buterin proposed reviving ‘crypto-punk’ revolution, which was conceived for the network in its infancy.

A month earlier, he released the essay ‘My Techno-Optimism’, in which he shared his views on the impact of new developments, notably blockchain and artificial intelligence, on the progression of human civilisation.
