AI-Powered Robots Perform First Dental Surgery

An autonomous robot equipped with artificial intelligence has conducted a full dental procedure for the first time, according to New Atlas.

The Boston-based company Perceptive employs a handheld 3D scanner to create a detailed model of a patient’s mouth, including teeth, gums, and nerves. This is achieved using optical coherence tomography (OCT).

OCT constructs high-resolution, three-dimensional models with approximately 90% accuracy using light beams.

Based on this data, the doctor and patient decide on the treatment. The robot then plans and executes the operation.

The machine’s initial specialization is preparing a tooth for a crown. While a human takes about two hours for this procedure, the robot completes it in 15 minutes. It can safely perform the operation “even in the most challenging motion conditions.” All trial tests on moving individuals were successful.

“We are thrilled with the successful completion of the world’s first fully automated robotic dental procedure. This medical breakthrough enhances the precision and efficiency of procedures and democratizes access to quality care, improving patient experiences and clinical outcomes,” commented Perceptive CEO Chris Ciriello.

Dr. Karim Zaklama of Perceptive noted that their solution will transform dentistry. Doctors will be able to diagnose problems earlier and more accurately, interact more effectively with patients, reduce their time in the chair, and provide better treatment.

Previously, experts developed an AI model capable of detecting 13 different types of cancer with 98.2% accuracy based on DNA data from tissue samples.
