OpenAI Expresses Interest in Acquiring Google Chrome
The AI firm OpenAI is prepared to purchase the Chrome browser should a court order Google to sell it, according to Bloomberg.
“Yes, we would be interested, like many others,” stated Nick Turley, ChatGPT’s product lead.
The US Department of Justice summoned OpenAI’s top executive to testify during a three-week trial aimed at determining what changes Google must make to its business. In 2024, a federal judge ruled that the corporation had monopolized the search market.
The Department of Justice has demanded that the American firm divest itself of Chrome.
ChatGPT is available as an extension in the Google Chrome browser. However, deeper integration with OpenAI’s products could create a superior offering, Turley emphasized.
“If ChatGPT were integrated into Chrome, it could offer a truly incredible experience. We would have the opportunity to introduce users to what the first interaction with artificial intelligence looks like,” he highlighted.
According to him, one of the company’s key challenges is the dissemination of technology. Although it reached an agreement to integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone, achieving similar success with Android smartphone manufacturers has been elusive.
It was previously reported that Google began paying Samsung for pre-installing Gemini AI on devices. Although the agreement is not exclusive, OpenAI has not succeeded in negotiations with the South Korean company.
“It’s not for lack of trying. We never reached the point where we could discuss specific terms,” noted Turley.
The expert added that some large companies might hinder OpenAI’s development. According to him, powerful competitors “control the access points to how people discover products, including ours.”
“People discover products through a browser or an app store. Real choice stimulates competition. Users should have the ability to choose,” said the ChatGPT lead.
Should a court order Google to sell its browser, it would mark the first court-mandated breakup of a major American company since the AT&T split in the 1980s.
In April, it was revealed that OpenAI was developing its own social network, similar to X.
Earlier, the company introduced the ChatGPT search engine, which “allows for timely answers with links to relevant web sources.”
