Revolut Introduces Bitcoin Payments via Lightning Network

Customers of the fintech company Revolut in the UK and certain countries within the EEA can now make fast and inexpensive bitcoin transactions through the Lightning Network (LN) micropayment system.

The partnership was established with David Marcus’s Lightspark.

Users also have access to MoneyGrid, a payment routing service based on LN. It simplifies cross-border fund transfers for both businesses and individuals. According to the company, the system connects over 300 million users in more than 140 countries.

Previously, Lightning Network was integrated by Coinbase, Binance, Bitfinex, Kraken, OKX, and BitMEX.

In 2023, Lightspark implemented a similar initiative for the cryptocurrency private bank Xapo Bank. Clients of the institution gained the ability to make bitcoin purchases up to $100.

By the end of 2024, the fintech company Revolut reported a record pre-tax profit of £1.09 billion ($1.4 billion) (+149%).

One of the key drivers was the growth in activity of the wealth management division, which increased by 298%, reaching $647 million. This figure includes revenues from cryptocurrency operations, commodities, as well as trading and savings products.

According to the Financial Times, Revolut is exploring the possibility of entering the stablecoin market.
