Romania to auction off seized Bitcoin and Ethereum

In Romania, Bitcoin and Ethereum seized in a fraud case will go to auction. The lots appeared in the system of the National Agency for the Management of Seized Assets (ANABI).

For Romania, this auction will be the first in its history. The starting price for 0.97 ETH is 1,670 Romanian leu ($401). For 0.6 BTC — 30,535 lei ($7,347).

For the transfer of the cryptocurrencies, the agency will require the winner to provide information about addresses linked to the cryptocurrency exchange. It must be a legal entity, use KYC procedures, comply with the country’s financial legislation and anti-money-laundering measures.

In global practice, this is not the first instance of authorities seizing cryptocurrency in criminal cases. In February 2020, Latvia’s State Revenue Service confiscated Bitcoin worth 200 euros that had been used for criminal purposes.

In March, an Irish court classified the Dublin resident’s bitcoins as criminal proceeds. He had €52 million in cryptocurrency confiscated.
