Media: Nvidia to unveil mining accelerator based on 7nm GA100 core

Nvidia is considering releasing CMP HX mining accelerators based on the GA100 GPU. Videocardz reports, citing insider kopite7kimi.

The GA100 chip is used in Nvidia’s A100 professional accelerators, released several months before the GeForce RTX 30 lineup.

Unlike gaming Ampere, the GA100 chip has separate CUDA cores for double-precision calculations and is designed for intensive compute workloads.

“GA100 is a monster for mining,” wrote kopite7kimi, without specifying what performance the new device will demonstrate.

The GA100 and the A100 accelerator in SXM4 form factor first went on sale in May 2020. Nvidia subsequently introduced a PCIe 4.0 x16 two-slot expansion-card model for data-centres with centralized cooling.

Professional accelerators are largely similar to mining GPUs. Both types require powerful compute GPUs and lack display connectors.

The Tensor Core of the A100 delivers up to 19.5 TFLOPS for single-precision calculations. The card is equipped with 40 GB of memory HBM2 at 1.6 TB/s. The DAG size is 3.49 GB for Ethereum and 3.58 GB for Ethereum Classic.

In February, Nvidia decided to halve the hash rate of the desktop graphics card GeForce RTX 3060, to target gamers’ needs.

To meet demand from miners, the company announced the NVIDIA CMP (Cryptocurrency Mining Processor) line of chips for professional mining.

Later online surfaced the first photographs of the graphics processor Nvidia Gigabyte CMP 30HX, the lower-end model of the new series.
