Indian couple to wed in the metaverse

A couple from India has decided to hold their wedding in the metaverse, staging a Harry Potter-themed party. The move was prompted by COVID-19 restrictions linked to the pandemic, according to CNN.

Official measures introduced by authorities compel couples to either scale back celebrations or cancel them altogether. Dinesh Sivakumar Padmavati and Janaganandhini Ramaswami, residents of Tamil Nadu, invited 2,000 guests into the metaverse — twenty times more than they could have afforded in the real world.

The newlyweds are fans of J.K. Rowling’s best-selling books. For the ambience, the groom, who works in blockchain, created a space resembling Hogwarts Castle, where many scenes from her books take place. About 150,000 rupees ($2,016) were spent on designing, developing, and conducting the celebration.

The formal ceremony will be held in person, in the presence of close friends and relatives. Afterward, the couple will \”enter\” the metaverse, where they will spend an hour with guests who will be able to customise the appearance of their avatars and admire the surroundings.

The digital wedding will also allow the bride’s father, who died last year, to be present. According to the groom, the metaverse will grant them his blessing.

A Reddit user angered the bride by gifting an NFT instead of an engagement ring.

Earlier, investor lost his wife after refusing to sell Bitcoin at $60,000.
