Tesla’s AI chief Andrej Karpathy resigns

Tesla’s AI director and head of the Autopilot program, Andrej Karpathy, has left his post after four months of ‘creative leave’.

«It has been a great pleasure to help Tesla in achieving its goals over the past five years, and it is difficult to make the decision to part ways,» the engineer said.

The engineer did not disclose his future plans.

«I hope to spend more time revisiting my long-standing interests in the fields of AI, open-source software and education,» he noted.

Karpathy’s departure comes amid mass layoffs at Tesla. The company previously laid off more than 200 Autopilot division employees and closed its San Mateo, California office. In total, the automaker plans to cut up to 10% of its staff.

Prior to joining Tesla, Karpathy was a research scientist in OpenAI’s deep learning program, specializing in computer vision and generative modeling.

Along with him, покинули Tesla Energy’s Senior Software Manager Chris Rollins and Diversity and Inclusion Director Kristen Cavano.

Earlier in March, the electric-car maker incorporated artificial intelligence into its long-term development plan.

In December, Elon Musk said that Tesla’s robots will prevent the collapse of civilization.
