US Space Force Deploys Robot Dogs for Patrols

The United States Space Force station at Cape Canaveral plans to use robot dogs for patrols and to automate certain security tasks. Gizmodo reports.

On July 27, 2022, the military demonstrated the devices and later published several photos showing personnel operating two robotic dogs at the station.

According to the Space Force, the devices are intended for “manual and repetitive tasks,” as well as for “assessing damage, patrolling and saving a substantial amount of man-hours.”

The robot dogs are developed by Philadelphia-based Ghost Robotics.

“They are unstoppable, able to quickly rise after any slip, fall or malfunction and continue moving, using our patented blind operations,” the developers said.

The robot dogs are equipped with visual and auditory sensors and can be controlled by a person or operate autonomously.

In November 2020, the U.S. Air Force began using similar devices.

“These robot dogs will be used as force multipliers to increase situational awareness by patrolling territories that are off-limits to people and vehicles,” said Jordan Criss, commander of the 325th Security Squadron.

Cape Canaveral lies on the Atlantic coast of Florida. In addition to the U.S. Air Force Station, the Kennedy Space Center is located here. These sites are used for launching spacecraft.

In July, a Briton who lost a hard drive containing 7,500 BTC said he intended to enlist two robot dogs from Boston Dynamics.

In October 2021, scientists taught Spot to interact with nuclear waste at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

In February, the New York Police Department deployed a Boston Dynamics robot dog to the scene of a crime. Later, the police “fired” Spot due to negative reaction from politicians and the public.
