In real life, Ryan and Candice Herli of Phoenix, Arizona, have been married for 14 years. For registering the marriage in the metaverse, they hired the Rose Law Group. According to its president Jordan Rose, the specialists developed ‘an entire legal concept’.
The groom and bride signed a ‘virtual prenuptial agreement’ identifying their identities and digital assets. The marriage certificate was issued as an NFT.
‘As of now, there is no legal framework in the metaverse for entering into a marriage, so whether it will have legal force depends more on the contract,’ Cointelegraph quotes Rose as saying.
According to the publication, the ceremony did not go without technical problems. For some guests the bride wore a gown, for others a hoodie, and some invitees did not see her at all.
Earlier, the India-based couple announced plans to host a wedding in the metaverse due to restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier, in September 2021, a Reddit user recounted a broken engagement—the bride did not appreciate NFT given in place of an engagement ring.
