Iconic ‘Buy Bitcoin’ Sign Fetches 16 BTC at Auction

A notebook bearing the now-iconic phrase ‘Buy Bitcoin’ was sold for 16 BTC (just over $1 million). The auction house Scarce.City, which conducted the sale, announced it as a record-breaking amount for them.

The new owner of the notebook is an individual known by the pseudonym Squirrekkywrath. In the photo below, he stands to the left of the sign’s creator, Christian Langalis. Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy, remarked that Squirrekkywrath is a “Bitcoin veteran no one has ever heard of.”

The proceeds will fund Langalis’s startup, Tirrel Corp, which is developing a Lightning wallet on Urbit.

Back in 2017, Langalis held up the notebook with the ‘Buy Bitcoin’ inscription during a speech by then-Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen in the House of Representatives.

He was then escorted out of the building for violating committee rules, and the image went viral online.
