Cardano team sets timeline for Vasil hard fork

Cardano developers presented a proposal for the Vasil hard fork on the testnet and launched the countdown to the mainnet upgrade.

“With more than 75% of the testnet blocks produced by the new Vasil node (1.35.0), we now have a healthy chain density to work safely,” noted by specialists from Input Output Global (IOG).

\n\n

In the testnet, changes will take effect on 3 July after the start of epoch 215. According to the developers, the community requested a minimum four-week period to test the update before the mainnet hard fork.

\n\n

“As soon as it is convenient and ready for everyone, we will go through the same process to upgrade the mainnet to Vasil,” said IOG.

\n\n

The main objective is to ensure reliable and safe management of the network’s upgrade, the developers stressed.

\n\n

The team called Vasil “the biggest and best Cardano upgrade to date.”

\n\n

IOG noted that the improvements include higher throughput, better script performance for developers, and lower costs.

\n\n

“Work on Vasil up to now has been the most challenging development and integration program. It is a complex process that requires not only significant effort from working groups but also close coordination across the ecosystem,” wrote Nigel Hemsley, head of product integration at IOG, earlier.

The activation of Vasil is also expected to ease interaction with Plutus smart contracts.

\n\n

Smart contracts on Cardano became possible following the the previous Alonzo upgrade, which developers implemented in September 2021.
