Coinbase Unveils Wallet Infrastructure for AI Agents
Coinbase launches Agentic Wallets for autonomous AI agents.
The American exchange Coinbase has introduced Agentic Wallets, a wallet infrastructure designed for autonomous AI agents.
Introducing Agentic Wallets, our first ever wallet infrastructure built specifically for autonomous agents.

This new tool enables digital assistants to independently store funds, make payments, trade tokens, earn income, rebalance positions in the DeFi sector, and conduct on-chain transactions.
The developers highlighted the presence of built-in security mechanisms to prevent unauthorized actions.
“AI agents are everywhere—they answer questions, summarize documents, and assist with tasks. But today, neural networks hit a wall when it comes to handling money,” wrote Coinbase Developer Platform’s Eric Reppel and Josh Nickerson.
The Agentic Wallets infrastructure is built on the protocol x402 introduced in May. Coinbase is developing this standard with partners to ensure fully autonomous transactions.
The solution expands the capabilities of the previously launched AgentKit tool, which allowed wallets to be integrated during the agent creation stage.
“Did your assistant find a lucrative opportunity at three in the morning? The tool will automatically redistribute funds—without additional confirmation, as you have pre-authorized permissions and set limits,” noted Reppel and Nickerson.
Security Mechanisms
Initially, Agentic Wallets will operate with EVM networks and Solana. For Coinbase’s supported L2 solution Base, gas-free transactions are provided.
The wallets are equipped with a command-line interface that allows users to check the agent’s status, top up the balance, and activate new features.
Security is ensured by the Smart Security Guardrails system, which includes spending limits, session duration restrictions, and other control tools.
Enclave isolation technology guarantees that private keys remain within Coinbase’s secure infrastructure and are never transferred to a prompt or LLM.
“We are moving from agents that advise to those that act. From assistants that suggest to helpers that execute. From tools requiring constant human oversight to autonomous systems operating independently within trusted constraints,” noted Reppel and Nickerson.
The x402 protocol has processed 50 million transactions since its launch. In December, the exchange introduced its updated version with broader support for “traditional payment rails.”
Earlier, in February, Stripe announced a preview version of its “machine payments” tool. The solution allows developers to charge AI agents using the stablecoin USDC on the Base network and protocol x402.3.
