Greenidge Generation to launch new ‘green’ data centre for Bitcoin mining
New York-based Bitcoin mining company Greenidge Generation announced plans to launch a new Bitcoin mining facility in South Carolina.
The data centre will be located at the site of the former printing plant in Spartanburg. The company is leasing the building for 10 years from LSC Communications.
The operation is slated to commence in late 2021 or early 2022. Greenidge Generation intends to use the existing infrastructure with room for further growth.
“According to Greenidge’s longstanding commitment to environmental leadership in electricity generation and cryptocurrency operations, the Spartanburg facility will be fully carbon neutral,” the company said.
Earlier, three environmental organisations and more than 20 residents of the American town Torri filed a lawsuit against the local authorities and Greenidge Generation. In the plaintiffs’ view, officials approved the expansion of the mining centre without an environmental impact assessment.
In March 2021, it emerged that Greenidge Generation Holdings planned to list on Nasdaq via a merger with client-solutions provider Support.com.
In May, Greenidge Generation pledged to fully offset its carbon footprint from Bitcoin mining by purchasing CO₂ emissions quotas.
