IBM to build UK centre for quantum computing and artificial intelligence
The British government and IBM have signed a 210-million-pound agreement to collaborate in artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Modern technologies will be used for goals such as materials development and environmental sustainability.

As part of the programme, 60 researchers will be recruited, and interns and students will be brought in to work under IBM Research and the UK Science and Technology Council at the Hartree Centre.

’Artificial intelligence and quantum computing can revolutionise everything—from travel to the way we shop. These are the areas in which I want Britain to be a leader,’ said Britain’s science minister Amanda Solloway.

The Hartree Centre, opened in 2012 for high-performance computing, data analytics and AI research, is based at the Daresbury Laboratory, where research spans biomedicine, physics, chemistry, materials, engineering, computing and other fields.

The programme will form part of IBM’s Discovery Accelerator initiative on ‘accelerating discoveries and innovations based on the convergence of advanced technologies.’ It will be the first accelerator research centre in Europe.

Earlier in May, IBM announced a new breakthrough in quantum computing and unveiled the Qiskit Runtime service, which speeds up data processing by 120 times.

In April, the tech giant unveiled open-source software for training AI on quantum computers Qiskit Machine Learning.

In March 2019, IBM’s head of blockchain, Jess Lund, stated that quantum computing poses a threat to digital currencies and cryptography.
