NBA star Shaquille O’Neal challenges service of process in FTX case
Lawyers from Moskowitz, the firm handling the class-action on behalf of investors harmed by FTX’s collapse, “threw the summons into Shaquille O’Neal’s car.” In court, the star’s lawyers, the NBA, said this, The Block reports.
“This purported service is inadequate. It should be voided, and the suit against O’Neal dismissed,” said the entrepreneur’s defenders.
According to them, Moskowitz lawyers saw O’Neal behind the wheel of his car as he pulled out from the grounds of his Atlanta home. They threw the legal documents into the passing car, the star’s NBA lawyers say.
In April, Moskowitz lawyers stated that they had served O’Neal with a summons after three months of unsuccessful attempts. They say the service was captured on video. After the statements by O’Neal’s lawyers, Moskowitz confirmed that they had personally delivered the document to him.
Shaquille O’Neal is the latest among a group of celebrities being targeted over FTX advertising. Among them former basketball player Stephen Curry, the NFL star Tom Brady, comedian Larry David and Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka.
In May, it was reported that the lawyers of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried are seeking the dismissal of many charges before the start of the main trial. They request to dismiss almost all counts, except for the conspiracy to commit securities fraud, commodities fraud, and money laundering.
