US Presidential Candidate RFK Jr. Calls Bitcoin ‘Currency of Freedom’

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the junior in the current US presidential race, told Bitcoin Magazine in an interview that he intends to defend the first cryptocurrency should he be elected president.

The politician intends to back the US dollar with cryptocurrency and other hard assets to provide an alternative to fiat.

“Freedom of transactions is as important as freedom of speech,” Kennedy said.

The presidential candidate expressed skepticism about CBDC. In his words, national digital currencies could become tools for governments to control individuals’ financial transactions. Earlier, he has repeatedly criticized CBDC.

Kennedy promised on his first day in office to pardon WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and former NSA and CIA of the United States Edward Snowden. He also intends to take a closer look at the case of Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht, who has served the first decade of two life sentences, for which he was sentenced in 2015.

In June the politician promised to defend citizens’ right to the unimpeded ownership and use of the first cryptocurrency. Kennedy said that in May he purchased 14 BTC for his children as an investment. His candidacy was endorsed by former Twitter chief Jack Dorsey.

Earlier, Kennedy called Bitcoin an alternative to the traditional financial system and criticized American regulators for a “war on cryptocurrencies” that has led to a banking crisis in the country.

As reported earlier, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong called the upcoming US elections a key moment for regulating digital assets.

According to a Grayscale report, the push of cryptocurrencies among presidential candidates is driven by a forecast that Gen Z and millennial voters will make up a substantial share of the electorate — about 44%. Young people trust traditional institutions less and are more inclined toward new technologies.
