User loses more than $50,000 in LINK due to a transaction error

One of the Chainlink (LINK) token holders accidentally sent 4005 LINK (~$52,940 at the time of writing) to a smart contract that does not support asset operations.

The user, alias @D13Kabani, said he had lost his savings due to a mistake and haste. Instead of depositing the coins on Binance, he sent them to the decentralized finance game Aavegotchi contract.

The project developers confirmed the error, admitting that the tokens are “stuck forever”. To help the user, they created a dedicated donation wallet — the funds collected will be given to @D13Kabani at Christmas. The wallet currently holds $1,170 in ETH.

The contract’s creator, Nick Mudge, confirmed that the user’s funds disappeared. However, he did not rule out that “someone might find a way to recover the funds.” The developer has reached out to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin with the question of whether a “hard fork could be performed to reverse the transaction.”

Earlier in October, a trader transferred about $1.1 million in AAVE tokens to the address of a smart contract that does not provide a refund function. Within a month, several others made the same mistake.
