Spanish court rules John McAfee’s death a suicide

A Spanish court has ruled suicide as the official cause of death of the crypto-entrepreneur John McAfee. Reuters reports.

In June 2021, the body of the 75-year-old businessman was found in a prison cell a few hours after his extradition to the United States was approved.

Authorities said that ‘there is no evidence of any third-party involvement in the crime’.

Police came to this conclusion immediately after the first autopsy in 2021, but the businessman’s widow, Jenis was skeptical of the suicide version and began сбор подписей with the aim of persuading the government to issue the remains for an independent autopsy.

In her view, the court’s ruling was not unexpected for John and could not have driven him to despair. Jenis noted that he was prepared for the ensuing fight.

The entrepreneur’s death is surrounded by a multitude of conspiracy theories, many of which McAfee himself spawned in posts on X.

“I am content here. I have friends. The food is good. All is well. Know that if I hang myself, Epstein-style, it will be no fault of mine,” he wrote shortly before his death.

McAfee was arrested in October 2020 in Spain at the request of US authorities. The Securities and Exchange Commission accused the entrepreneur of deceiving investors in promoting ICO-projects, and the Justice Department of tax evasion. In 2021, McAfee faced charges of fraud and money laundering.

He himself described the case against him as an attack on all cryptocurrencies and said the charges were politically motivated.

In August 2022, the entrepreneur’s former girlfriend Samantha Herrera denied his death. In a Netflix documentary, she said that McAfee was still alive and hiding in Texas.
