Transforming an Old iPhone into an AI Smartphone

Some of the new AI features in the iPhone 16 series, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, can be replicated with existing market applications, eliminating the need to upgrade to a new device. This is reported by the NYT. 

On September 9, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16 series with support for the AI technology announced in June, known as Apple Intelligence.

The update will also be available for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, but not for the standard versions of this series or earlier generations.

Apple Intelligence introduces a range of new features to smartphones, including a smarter Siri, convenient photo search in the gallery, emoji and image generation, notification prioritization, extraction of key information from emails, text editing, and more. 

Owners of older iPhone models can access some of these features through third-party applications already available on the market, without needing to purchase a new smartphone. 

Text Summarization

One of the most anticipated features of Apple Intelligence is its ability to extract key points from lengthy texts and present them in a few sentences. This can be useful for summarizing long articles or lectures. 

A similar service is offered by the Arc Search browser. A journalist from NYT uploaded an 8,000-word article and received a concise summary of the main points. The summary was described as fairly accurate, though lacking important details. 

A comparable service is also offered by the web application Humata AI. Users can upload a document, such as a PDF, and ask the chatbot to highlight the most important points. 

Writing Tools

Another focus of the Apple Intelligence presentation was writing tools, which can make messages more professional. Numerous free applications available in the App Store can accomplish this task, including:

• ChatGPT by OpenAI;
• Gemini by Google;
• Bing AI by Microsoft.

Users need to insert text into the chatbot window and request a change in tone.

Image Generator

Creating images from prompts is another feature of Apple Intelligence that can be easily replaced by other neural networks. For instance, Meta AI, capable of generating images, is integrated into Instagram, WhatsApp, and other applications. 

Other similar resources include Adobe Firefly and ChatGPT. 

Photo Editing

Removing unwanted objects and people from photos is one of the most anticipated features. Since 2023, Google has offered a similar tool—Magic Eraser—in the Google Photos app for iOS and Android users.

Previously, the corporation released a new version of the prompt-based image generator Imagen 3.

In August, OpenAI introduced the ability to create two images in ChatGPT without a paid subscription.
