Ukraine suspends Binance Pay integration in the Diia app
The Ukrainian government has suspended the previously announced integration of the Binance Pay payment service into the state Diia app. CoinDesk reports, citing an unofficial comment from Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Oleksandr Borniakov.
According to him, the implementation of the feature has been suspended to “clarify a few points”. Borniakov did not rule out that cooperation on this matter could be resumed in the future.
“Diia already has some payment features, and creating a crypto platform is generally a good idea,” he told the publication.
A Binance spokesperson in Ukraine told ForkLog that discussing the initiative is “too early”. He said that, despite the “incredible level of development” of digital services, the local market requires additional regulation.
“We hope that our expertise and technologies can be useful in the state blockchain strategy precisely when the relevant legislation is adopted,” Binance said.
In ForkLog UA, Oleksandr Borniakov confirmed that the question of integrating foreign payment services, in particular Binance Pay, into Diia is not currently on the table.
According to him, only service providers that meet specifically established criteria and requirements will be able to interact with government services in Ukraine.
“These requirements are still under development, and the situation is somewhat complicated by the absence of a legal framework in Ukraine for handling virtual assets, which would significantly ease interaction between market participants and government services. After development, such criteria will be published, and all interested parties will be able to submit proposals for possible integrations,” the official said.
One reason for tensions between the exchange and Ukraine’s crypto market is that after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Binance continued serving Russian users. According to CEO Changpeng Zhao, Binance’s licensed European entities will certainly not be able to serve Russian citizens, but there is no unambiguous solution yet for other jurisdictions.
In response, a number of Ukrainian trading platforms delisted Binance’s BNB token.
Earlier, in late September, Binance added the verification capability through Diia.
