Vitalik Buterin Outlines Personal Priorities for 2025

In 2025, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin will focus on developing the core infrastructure of the network and promoting decentralized ecosystems.

In the context of the main network (L1), Buterin intends to focus on the long-term roadmap. He cited issues such as single-slot finality, virtual machine, statelessness, security, reliability, and decentralization as examples. 

The Ethereum founder will also concentrate on privacy, communication tools, information dissemination, and the social layer:

• better encryption of messages and documents;
• prediction markets and similar technologies;
• new types of communication tools.

Specifically, he mentioned the development of governance mechanisms, funding for public goods and open-source products. 

Buterin also plans to devote time to hardware and physical infrastructure, cryptography, operating systems, and protection against biological threats.

Separately, he identified areas where he plans to reduce his involvement, including:

• the practical side of scaling in the short term, including increasing the gas limit in L1 during 2026;
• P2P, block structure, and other research;
• many issues of the Ethereum Foundation;
• “proven” application-level categories (DeFi, payments, savings).

In Buterin’s view, these areas are no less important, but there are others who are deeply knowledgeable in these matters.

In April, the Ethereum Foundation announced a shift in focus towards user experience and L1 scaling issues.
