Compute North to lift Bitcoin-mining data-centre capacity to 1.2 GW

Compute North, a provider of infrastructure solutions for cryptocurrency mining, announced plans to expand the capacity of its supported data-centres to 1.2 GW. The Block reports.

The move comes amid a global shortage of production sites for Bitcoin miners, according to company representatives.

The Minnesota-based company will build five facilities. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2022.

Compute North currently operates three data centres with a combined capacity of over 100 MW in Texas, Nebraska and South Dakota. The company has not disclosed the locations of the new facilities.

According to Compute North CEO Dave Perrill, the data-centre energy consumption will be supplied by a mix of renewable and fossil-fuel sources. He added that making mining capacity 100% green is unlikely.

The company intends to meet demand from ASIC-equipment owners who were forced to cease operations in China under pressure from local authorities.

“In the past few weeks we have received inquiries averaging 100 MW,” Perrill explained.

The publication noted that due to insufficient capacity, including in Kazakhstan and Russia, the relocation of Chinese miners could take months, if not years.

“My forecast: the hash rate will return to ATH no earlier than the second-to-third quarter of 2022,” Perrill explained.

The Block reported that rivals such as the Russian BitRiver and the American Bit5ive will expand their capacities by 100 MW each.

According to the publication, offline mining equipment equivalent to 50 TH/s could consume between 3.6 GW and 9 GW.

In July, Nasdaq-listed The9 entered into an agreement to deploy mining equipment at a BitRiver data centre.

Earlier, Marathon Digital Holdings announced the construction of a 300 MW Texas facility in partnership with Compute North.
