Developers unveil wrapped ENS domains with extended functionality

Ethereum developers introduced the ENS Name Wrapper code, which allows turning ENS names into a “wrapped version” in the form of an ERC-1155 token. Domain owners will gain greater control over subdomain names.

In particular, the owner of example.eth could permit the creation of sub1.example.eth and limit further subdomain formation. It will still be possible to form sub1 from sub2.sub1.example.eth.

The ENS Name Wrapper will provide safeguards for:

  • transfers;
  • creation of further subdomains;
  • and the setting of textual records.

Each safeguard can be enabled or disabled permanently and irrevocably.

In other words, it would remove control over subdomains going forward.

The ENS Name Wrapper addresses the trust problem in scenarios where someone can grant a subdomain to another, only to reclaim it unilaterally. This happens after burning the corresponding safeguard.

The ERC-1155 standard will allow displaying, transferring and exchanging them in any wallet that supports it.

ENS metrics have reached new record highs. In early July, registrations on the Ethereum Name Service rose 163% in a week.

In July, a major NFT collector lost 100 ETH after a joking bet on an ENS domain he had registered.
