Potanin sees tokens as less risky than Bitcoin

Russian businessman Vladimir Potanin believes that tokens and the digital ruble are less risky assets than cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Bloomberg reports this.

In his view, the development of tokens and the digital ruble could render the discussion around cryptocurrency regulation moot. Potanin believes that such assets would allow the central bank to promote new technologies without the risks associated with cryptocurrencies.

Interros, Potanin’s company, is among the investors in the Russian tokenisation platform Atomyze. Last February, received from the Central Bank the status of operator of the information system for managing digital financial assets.

Potanin announced plans to launch a pilot program in the real estate sector in Norilsk. It would involve issuing tokens to purchase apartments, and launching a mortgage program in cooperation with Rosbank.

Interros is also in talks with the Hermitage about issuing NFTs for a collection of artworks, the proceeds from which could be directed toward their restoration, the businessman added.

Back in 2019, Potanin described Bitcoin as a ‘useful souvenir’ and said he was optimistic about the future of asset-backed tokens.
